Review - Iron Man 3 (Cinema)

In a nutshell this wasn't the Iron Man movie I was expecting but it was great entertainment all the same. Some real shocks and laugh out loud moments. The kind of movie you mull walking out of the cinema and then can't wait to see again.

Tony Stark isn't coping with life post Avengers Assemble. He has gone from being the alpha to one of the pack, the weakest - he's human. He just fought an alien war beside Thor and the Hulk. His powers come from augmentations he builds himself. He's feeling a little inferior and somewhat stressed. Which is probably not the best time to come up against a team of genetically modified super-humans led by the formidable Mandarin.

Iron Man 3 is written and directed by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon/Last Boy Scout and the first soldier to die in Predator - trivia fans). Support is masterfully provided by Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley with Gwyneth Paltrow finally getting a sizeable chunk of screen time. The story cleverly blends these characters (and a few more) while somehow keeping Robert Downey front and centre. Of the three outings he's probably at his best here, managing to juggle a weakened Tony Stark with the inventive genious we have come to love.

The plot isn't as broad or deep as something like Dark Knight Rises but it's all the better for it. We are promised entertainment and we get it in spades. We also get a barrel of laughs, a great twist and some genuine hand over eyes moments.

Highly recommended.

Just saw it myself and loved it--for all the reasons you've mentioned here. Ben Kingsley is an incredible actor, and the script was well-written. Amazing what a difference that makes.
